Pipes and slotted drainage pipes provide favorable economy and speed for night installation of expansion projects

The two-kilometer section of Toronto Highway 401 is being remodeled and expanded to accommodate current and future traffic. It is part of a $640 million, 6.21-mile project by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation to reduce traffic congestion, shorten commuting times, and promote economic growth in the region. This section of Highway 401 is one of the busiest highways in North America, with an annual average daily traffic volume of more than 420,000 vehicles. Some travelers report that it usually takes 30 minutes to travel 500 meters (one third of a mile). The scope of work planned to be completed in 2022 includes 10-lane and 12-lane roads, high-occupancy vehicle lanes, new and rebuilt bridges, utilities, and upgraded rainwater drainage systems.

To handle stormwater runoff, the new construction involved the installation of Advanced Drainage Systems, Inc. Duraslot grooved surface trenches with diameters of 300 mm and 375 mm (12 inches and 15 inches), the first of the 400 series of major highways. Brennan Paving & Construction, Ltd., a division of The Miller Group, installed drainage pipes during the night for a period of two months so that this can be done without affecting the traffic flow, which is the main transportation of Ontario’s economy. Tie. A total of more than 2,200 meters (7,218 feet) of pipes are installed in the separator between the east-west express and the collector.

The pipe is made of double-wall corrugated high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe with an aluminum trough at the top designed to intercept water flow through the paved or cleaned area. It is a substitute for corrugated steel slotted drainage ditch, prefabricated ditch drainage ditch, cast-in-place ditch drainage ditch, catch basin and curb entrance. The outer corrugated wall provides strength and durability, while the smooth inner lining provides superior hydraulic pressure. The Brennan team usually installs 60 meters (197 feet) per day.

Duraslot has the same inlet as the corrugated steel slotted drain. A 45 mm (1 ¾ inch) wide opening extends along the length of the pipe, and a special connector provides a continuous groove of almost unlimited length. For curb and gutter applications, where the entrance acts as an orifice, the AISI manual method can be used to determine the hydraulic capacity.

The entire Toronto Highway 401 project was delivered through the design, construction and financing, and public-private partnership model, transferring the risks related to the design, construction and financing to the private sector. Using a design-build method allows designers and contractors to work collaboratively with project stakeholders.
